The NBA was formed in 1949. It was an all white league. Because of the lack of white players due to World War II the Celtics drafted it's first African American player in 1950. The NBA recruited more African American players in the 1960's and 1970's in response to the Civil Rights Movement. It had a quota of 3 to 4 players per team for fear of losing white fans who provided financial support for the league.
The Legacy of Jackie Robinson
He was the first to integrate a major league sports team, the Major League Baseball (MLB). In 1947 his heroism and attraction, increased attendance at the game and profits for the MLB. His success was used to promote integration of pro basketball.
World War II
There was a lack of white players to play in the NBA during World War II. Black players were recruited to keep the league going. World War II exposed blacks and whites to integration.This helped to start the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and encourage integration of professional sports.
